The content of the City & Guilds 2382-12 (17th Edition) Exam is based on City & Guilds Candidates will require access to a copy of BS 7671 during the assessment and the examination will be based upon this document only. The aim of this unit is to enable the candidate to demonstrate that they are conversant with the IEE Wiring Regulations Seventeenth Edition BS 7671:2008 (the national standard for the electrical industry in respect of safe use and operation of electrical equipment and systems in the United Kingdom).

This qualification is primarily aimed at practising electricians with relevant experience and other allied professionals e.g. surveyors, consultants and other trades needing to update and enhance their understanding of IEE Wiring Regulations. It is also suitable for anyone wishing to demonstrate an understanding of the IEE 17th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671).

It allows candidates to progress into employment or to the following City & Guilds qualifications:


  • City & Guilds Level 2 Certificate in Fundamental Inspection, Testing and Initial Verification (2392-10)
  • City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate in Inspection, testing and certification of electrical installations (2391-10)
  • City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate in Design, erection and verification of electrical installations (2391-20)
  • City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate in Building Regulations for Electrical Installation Contractors In Dwellings (2393-10)
  • City & Guilds Level 4 Higher Professional Diploma in Building Services Engineering (4467-04)

There are no formal entry requirements for candidates undertaking this qualification but must be able to supply their own copy of the IET Wiring Regulations BS 7671:2008 (2011) and require a non-programmable calculator. However candidates must have the potential and opportunity to successfully gain the qualification. City & Guilds also provides the Exam Success Book specifically for this qualification.

The City & Guilds 2382-12 (17th Edition) is a 2 hour, GOLA online exam, consisting of 60 multiple choice questions.

The Requirements for Electrical Installations: IET Wiring REgulations:BS 7671:2008 Incorporating amendment No 1: 2011

And the Downloadable Home Study Course are combined as a package to prepare you thoroughly for the Exam.

The 17th Edition IET Wiring Regulations Home Study Course begins with a helpful and informative 'Electrical Theory' module which re-caps basic electrical principles in relation to the wiring regulations.

Each module ends with a Self Assessed Questions section which provides a means to check your progress and essential practice for the City & Guilds 17th Edition Exam.

Also included is the new and updated 17th Edition Online Exam Simulator which provides a realistic exam experience, on a similar interface to that used by the actual exam body.

The simulator picks randomly from a pool of over 1600 questions and answers each time it is run and includes a timer and progress bar just like the real exam.

With the included Course Guide to help you, this home study package provides a convenient and cost effective means of acquiring a highly regarded qualification with the minimum of fuss and expense.

A minimum of 30 guided learning hours is required before you can sit the Exam. On the day of your Exam you will be required to sign a Declaration stating that you have undertaken the minimum guided learning hours.
